Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR)

Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) in Toronto

When you’ve experienced something traumatic, it can be hard to know how to talk about it.

You might know you need help processing what’s happened, but you aren’t sure where you’d even begin.

Even worse, different sights, smells, or words can bring back painful memories, forcing you to experience them all over again.

If talking about your experiences isn’t enough, Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) can be an effective alternative.

What is EMDR?

Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) is a form of therapy that involves focusing on a traumatic memory while experiencing bilateral stimulation - this might be an action like following a light with your eyes or tapping alternating shoulders.

While it was originally created to treat PTSD, EMDR is now used for a wide range of mental health issues.

EMDR can help with issues related to:

  • Trauma
  • Addictions
  • Chronic pain
  • Panic disorders
  • Depression and anxiety
  • Eating disorders and body image

How Does EMDR Work?

The main goal of EMDR is to change how your memories are stored in your brain.

You’ll recall distressing memories in steps, and your EMDR therapist will guide you through re-processing them until they’re no longer overwhelming.
