Counselling in Toronto

Counselling is based upon a strong foundation of trust and confidence. For successful counselling, you need a counsellor who understands you. A counsellor is a trained professional and has clinical experience of face-to-face counselling, as well as specific training in Counselling Theory and Skills.

What is Counselling?

Counselling is when a therapist (counsellor) and client work together in a professional relationship to discuss and work on the healing process from start to finish.

Counselling, along with psychotherapy, have been proven to increase the levels of:

  • Motivation
  • Happiness
  • Self-esteem
  • Overall fulfilment in life
  • Satisfaction in relationships

It can also decrease the levels of stress and anxiety in an individual. Typically, a counsellor will conduct short to medium term work, and this is based upon the client’s individual goals, personality and factors unique to the client.

What Different Types of Counselling Can I Get?

There are many different types of counselling available, and what you need depends on the situation you’re going through. Counselling styles include:

  • Psychodynamic
  • Humanistic
  • Behavioural
  • Existential
  • Couples counselling
  • Family counselling
  • Educational and psychoeducation

Here are KMA, our therapists are trained in many different types of counselling based on your needs. These include:

You might even be wondering why the cost of therapy is different depending on where you look.

Is Therapy/Counselling Covered by OHIP?

Unfortunately, most therapy services are not covered by OHIP. Private offices are the most common therapeutic practices. If a therapist works for a private practice, they will usually only accept private insurance or out-of-pocket payments. This includes most psychologists, psychotherapists, and social workers.

The prices and services offered by private offices range widely. Read the article What Are the Different Types of Therapists? to learn more about these services.

Even though many therapy services are not covered under OHIP, there are options out there. Read our article Is Therapy Covered by OHIP? to learn about these options.

How Many Counselling Sessions Do I Need?

How many counselling sessions you will need usually depends on the scope of your issues and the many factors unique to you. Generally speaking, most people will have a sense of when counselling has been successfully completed.

This sense of successful completion will come about when you have overcome major issues in your life and notice new feelings. You will notice an increase in energy, enthusiasm, motivation and interest, and you will gain the confidence to tackle new challenges on your own.

Research has shown us that your experience with counselling will depend largely on your therapist’s personality and the connection between you two, regardless of the theoretical orientation of your therapist.

Successful counselling is also dependent on maintaining contact and momentum with your counsellor. With attendance of regular sessions, progression and healing is attainable faster than when sessions are spread far apart. Most find weekly sessions the most productive, and some may find bi-weekly or twice-a-week sessions are the right pace for them.

How Does Counselling at KMA work?

Counselling here at KMA Therapy begins with a 50-minute introductory session with one of our intake counsellors. In these fifty minutes, we will ask important questions to determine the severity of the problem and the treatment approach needed.

  • Why are you seeking counselling at this time?
  • What are you experiencing in your day-to-day life that could be improved?
  • We learn about your upbringing, family, and past experiences.
  • Create goals based on what you want out of life

We’re also asking questions to get a better sense of your personality. Here at KMA, we believe it’s very important that we get to know you so that your counsellor is the ‘right fit’. The consultation is also a wonderful time to address any questions you may have.

Finally, we will provide you with a customised ‘plan of action’ – this includes the recommended therapist who is best equipped to suit your needs, a recommended duration of therapy (if applicable), and a recommendation for any additional testing or psychological services we feel would be helpful.

Many of our counselling services are covered under health insurance plans. This falls under the category of “Psychological Services”. Here at KMA Therapy, we are strongly dedicated and motivated to help you resolve your issues in a safe, professional and warm environment.
