Eating Disorder Therapy in Toronto

Eating disorders are rarely only about food. They are complex emotional issues that can be influenced by our family environment, relationships, work, and even social media.

Beyond their impact on your physical health, they can disrupt your social life, leaving you feeling anxious about attending any events involving food.

Eating disorders are serious and dangerous if left untreated.

5 Signs of Disordered Eating

When seeking help for disordered eating, it can be helpful to have a clear understanding of what you’re experiencing.

There are several different types of eating disorders, and the specific behaviours and symptoms can vary from type to type. Generally, you will experience a complicated relationship with food and with your body image.

When experiencing disordered eating, you may feel:

  1. Preoccupied with your weight
  2. Heavily focused on body image, size, or shape
  3. Compelled to perform specific rituals around food
  4. Obsessive about food, or deem foods as “safe” or “unsafe” to eat
  5. Uncomfortable participating in social activities involving food (such as getting dinner with friends)

Who can have an eating disorder?

Eating disorders are often inaccurately depicted in the media as an issue that only impacts young, white women.

25% of people diagnosed with eating disorders are men.

If you’re struggling with disordered eating, you deserve to get help and support.

Help for Eating Disorders in Toronto

Eating disorders can be difficult to overcome, but you don’t have to face them alone.

Here at KMA, our therapy for eating disorders begins with a 50-minute introductory session.

The fee for this session is $190 and is often covered by your workplace insurance package.

In your introductory session, we’ll ask you questions to explore:

  • How long you’ve been experiencing these issues, and when they started
  • What behaviours are most negatively impacting your quality of life
  • Any life situations that may be impacting your eating habits
  • Other coping mechanisms you may be using for stress

We’ll help you establish a customized plan of action, match you with the best therapist for what you’re facing, and recommend any additional psychological tests or additional services (such as meeting with a nutritionist).

Eating disorders are serious and often coincide with other mental health issues. We want to ensure that you receive the kind of care you need.

During your consultation, if we feel you would benefit from a team medical approach, we will refer you to an appropriate Eating Disorders Centre that can provide medical support.
