Marriage Counselling in Toronto

Marriage is a dynamic, evolving experience. It can be satisfying and exciting, yet stressful and frustrating.

As you grow and evolve, so do your needs in your marriage. And while you and your spouse might be on the same page in some areas of your life, other areas might have become completely unbalanced.

Marriage counselling can be a great way to reflect on what you and your spouse both want and need from your relationship.

Why Do Couples Go to Marriage Counselling?

Every couple attends marriage counselling for their own unique reasons - you might be having a hard time balancing household chores or struggling to spend enough time together.

Couples seek counselling for a range of issues, including:

  • Infidelity
  • Trust issues
  • Grief and loss
  • Intimacy issues
  • Major life transitions
  • Financial challenges
  • Communication issues
  • Personality differences
  • Household responsibilities
  • Parenting and family issues
  • Issues with in-laws and extended family

Does Marriage Counselling Work?

The short answer is: Yes. Marriage counselling positively impacts over 70% of couples who attend and can lead to a higher quality of life for both parties.

Marriage counselling can help you and your spouse:

  • Learn problem-solving skills
  • Improve your communication skills
  • Gain new perspectives of each other
  • Forgive, grow, and move forward together
  • Grow your sense of mutual respect and support
  • Understand each other’s needs, desires, and emotions
  • Develop tools to navigate stressful situations (like moving or family issues)

What To Expect in Marriage Counselling

Marriage counselling isn’t the same as what you see on television - it’s not all crossed arms, accusations, and cold truths from an unsympathetic therapist.

Marriage counselling isn’t easy, but it can be a positive experience where both you and your spouse get exactly what you need.

Here are three things to expect when attending marriage counselling:

1. Your Marriage Counsellor Will Not Take Sides

You might be worried that if you go to counselling, your couples therapist will immediately take your spouse’s side.

But your marriage counsellor isn’t there to take sides - they will help you shift you perspective from “me versus you” to “us versus our problems.”

2. You Will Gain an Objective Perspective of the Issues You’re Facing

Even if you both think you’re in the right, it’s likely that you and your partner both have clouded judgment when it comes to your relationship.

You may both think you’re justified in your approach to the relationship - but when you’re stuck in a bad routine for a long time, it’s easy to lose perspective.

‍Your marriage counsellor will objectively observe your emotional patterns, communication, and behaviours in a safe, non-judgmental environment.

3. You Will Understand the Root of Your Relationship Problems

An explosive argument over who needs to take out the trash is rarely only about the trash itself.

Marriage counselling will help you understand what’s going on below the surface, and understand where both of your unmet needs are manifesting as relationship issues.

Miscommunication happens all the time in relationships, and your marriage therapist is here to help you communicate clearly and address the real problems in your relationship.
