It's normal to feel a bit hesitant and guarded at first, but you have to let that guard down in order to have the kind of change in your life that you really want to see. 

2. Write down a list of what you want to explore

Number two is having a list of topics that you want to cover. 

If you've ever seen one of those videos where people make PowerPoint presentations for their future therapists, that's honestly a really great idea. 

It can be easy to get nervous and draw a blank in your first session, so having a prepared list of what you want to go over can be really helpful and really reassuring. 

3. Be willing to let your walls down

Number three is that you have to be willing to open up. 

It's important to be willing to share about your life and the challenges you're experiencing. 

At the same time, it's important to speak up about what you do and don't think will work for you. 

Your thoughts, your opinions and your feelings are just as important as your therapist’s.
