Global News April 2012

May 2012

Teens face an abundance of pressures in our society today. After the return of Michelle Yu, I spoke to Global News about the added pressures that teenagers are facing in 2012.

Almost all of a teenager's day revolves around how others will view them. What clothing to wear to look 'cooler' or 'normal' and how to act in order to blend into a crowd. From a personal perspective, I have so much empathy for teens today who are struggling to fit in to the unrealistic image that the media creates for them.

In addition, I've witnessed how high school is even more intense in terms of marks that a student needs to achieve to succeed. Back when I was in high school in the year 2000, I think we needed an 80% average to get into my program at the University of Guelph, which sounded reasonable at the time, but also allowed me to focus on all the activities I wanted to, like dance, sports, and friends. Today, the average student needs something like at 90% to get into the same program I took. With all that pressure, what time is left to 'be a kid?'
