Eating disorders rarely revolve around just food. They are complex emotional issues that can be influenced by our family environment, relationships, school, career, and by the media. Eating disorders include bingeing, purging, using laxatives, over-exercising, feeling guilty about food, over-eating, and obsessing about weight. Eating disorders may be common, but they are dangerous if left untreated.
Psychotherapy and Counselling here at KMA Therapy begins with a 30 minute consultation with our director, Kimberly Moffit, or one of our intake counsellors.
In these thirty minutes, we will ask important questions to determine the severity of the problem and the treatment approach needed.
When did the obsession over food begin?
What are your current eating behaviours? Are you restricting/bingeing/purging?
What are your current coping mechanisms for stress?
What life situations are contributing to the severity of your eating problems?
We’re also asking questions to get a better sense of your personality. Here at KMA, we believe it’s very important that we get to know you so that your counselor is the ‘right fit. The consultation is also a wonderful time to address any questions you may have.
Finally, we will provide you with a customized ‘plan of action’ – this includes the recommended eating disorder counselor who is best equipped to suit your needs, a recommended duration of therapy (if applicable), and a recommendation for any additional testing or psychological services we feel would be helpful.
The fee for consultations is $120 and this is usually covered by your workplace benefits package.
*Severe cases of anorexia nervosa can be very difficult to treat and often patients recover best with a team of medical professionals. If during your consultation we feel you would benefit from a team medical approach, we will refer you to the appropriate Eating Disorders Centre that can provide medical support.
Counselling and Psychotherapy can help you achieve lasting change in dealing with your eating disorder. Eating disorder therapists at KMA help you explore the root triggers of your eating behaviours, which can include emotions, workplace issues, family relationships, and social environments.
Our eating disorder therapists also develop treatment plans which empower you to take control and free yourself from the behaviours. Our aim is not just to talk: but to develop tools and resources to change your way of thinking and eating, reverse irrational or dysfunctional eating behaviours, and promote psychologically healthier patterns of living.
