What is Counselling?


Counselling is when a therapist (counsellor) and client work together in a professional relationship to discuss and work on the healing process from start to finish. Counselling is based upon a strong foundation of trust and confidence. A counsellor is a trained professional and has clinical experience of face-to-face counselling, as well as specific training in Counselling Theory and Skills. Typically, a counsellor will conduct short to medium term work, and this is based upon the client’s individual goals, personality and factors unique to the client. Counselling, along with psychotherapy, have been proven to increase the levels of happiness, motivation and overall fulfillment, as well as decrease the levels of stress and anxiety in an individual.


Many of our counselling services are covered under health insurance plans, and this will fall under the category of “Psychologist Services”.  Here at KMA Therapy, we are strongly dedicated and motivated to help you resolve your issues in a safe, professional and warm environment.
Although psychotherapy and counselling differ slightly in its nature, the two can be used simultaneously to provide a therapeutic treatment plan that is tailored specifically for you.


The KMA Therapy office is a warm, cozy and positive environment, and we always offer you a warm tea or coffee when you arrive. Along with counselling, we offer many other services to compliment your therapeutic experience. How do I know if I could benefit from Counselling?
Counselling has been shown to be helpful in treating a various and wide range of issues, such as unhappy or unsettling situations that one may find themselves in, dealing with psychological health, and generally talking through issues and finding ways to solve them. Research and studies have exemplified that when we talk through issues and re-frame our unhappy memories, we can actually move these negative or traumatic thoughts into the proper parts of our brain for healing. This is why talking to our friends and family can feel so helpful and rewarding. Our professionally trained counsellors have the appropriate tools, resources and experience to help you start and finish the healing process for many issues, including: Depression, Divorce, Addiction, Anxiety, Anger, Stress, Eating Disorders, Abuse, Phobias, Self Esteem Issues, Trauma, Fertility Issues and Bereavement.
 
The Counselling Relationship
Research has shown us that your experience with counselling will depend largely on your therapist’s personality and the connection between you two, regardless of the theoretical orientation of your therapist. Keeping this research in mind and taking it to heart, we always ensure you begin therapy with a 30-minute intake session with our director at KMA Therapy, Kimberly, or one of our intake counsellors. At this 30-minute intake, the intake counsellor will determine the best course of action for you in terms of treatment plan, recommended amount of time for counselling, your goals and expectations and importantly, the recommended therapist that is right for you that you can truly connect with.


Counselling depends on the scope of your issues and the many factors unique to you. Generally speaking, most people will have a sense of when counselling has been successfully completed. This sense of successful completion will come about when you have overcome major issues in your life and notice new feelings. You will notice an increase in energy, enthusiasm, motivation and interest, and you will gain the confidence to tackle new challenges on your own.
Successful counselling is also dependent on maintaining contact and momentum with your counselor. With attendance of regular sessions, progression and healing is attainable faster than when sessions are spread far apart. Most find weekly sessions the most productive, and some may find bi-weekly or twice-a-week sessions are the right pace for them.
